B2.1 · Adjektive + Präposition

Adjektive mit Präpositionen (adjective + preposition)

Some adjectives are used with a particular preposition, and that preposition determines the case (Akkusativ/Dativ): stolz auf (+A), zufrieden mit (+D), abhängig von (+D). You will work out the correct preposition and case yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the adjective with its fixed preposition and case. The preposition and case are learnt together with the adjective.

B2 · ADJEKTIVE MIT PRAEPOSITIONEN
B2 Adjective + Preposition Exercises: stolz auf, zufrieden mit, fähig zu, verantwortlich für

At B2 many adjectives only complete their meaning with a fixed preposition; this preposition is not arbitrary and also determines the case (Kasus) of the noun that follows. Here "auf" and "für" take the accusative: "Ich bin stolz auf meinen Bruder", "Er ist verantwortlich für das Projekt". "mit" and "zu", on the other hand, take the dative: "Sie ist zufrieden mit ihrer Note", "Er ist fähig zu großen Leistungen". The preposition usually comes straight after the adjective, near the end of the sentence. When an object clause is needed, the da-compound comes into play: "Ich bin stolz darauf, dass du bestanden hast." In short, the right preposition and the right case should always be learnt together; one is no use without the other.

📌
Golden rule: The case of the noun is set not by the adjective but by its preposition: stolz auf + Akkusativ, interessiert an + Dativ.

Each time you fill a gap in the exercise, you see a short note explaining why "auf + Akkusativ" or "mit + Dativ" is needed, so you internalise the pattern without repeating the mistake. You practise the four most often confused ones (stolz auf, zufrieden mit, fähig zu, verantwortlich für) one by one until they become automatic. These fixed structures are decisive in the writing and speaking sections of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc Deutsch B2 and TestDaF, because these exams expect full command of adjective–preposition combinations and correct case use. The more you repeat them, the less often you choose the wrong preposition.
