B2 Advanced Time Prepositions (innerhalb, außerhalb, binnen, ab, von … an) – Exercises

At B2, time expressions go beyond basic prepositions such as in, an and nach; in formal and academic language you are expected to use prepositions that express limits, starting points and periods with the correct case. innerhalb and außerhalb usually take the genitive: "Innerhalb einer Woche müssen Sie antworten." binnen also sets a time limit and is mostly used with the dative: "Binnen drei Tagen wurde der Antrag bearbeitet." ab marks a starting point and takes the dative: "Ab nächstem Montag gilt der neue Plan." The pattern von … an also stresses the beginning: "Von Kindheit an hat er Deutsch gelernt." When these phrases stand at the start of the sentence, the conjugated verb follows immediately, in second position.

Golden rule: Every time preposition has its own fixed case: innerhalb/außerhalb + Genitiv, binnen/ab/seit + Dativ, bis + Akkusativ.
