A2 Time Prepositions (Temporale Präpositionen) Exercises

Time prepositions help you say when something happens; but they do not all work the same way, and each requires a particular case (Kasus). "vor" and "nach" set up a sequence: "Vor dem Essen wasche ich mir die Hände" (before the meal), "nach dem Essen" (after the meal). "seit" gives a time that started at one point and is still going on: "Ich lerne seit zwei Jahren Deutsch." "während" describes what happens during something and takes the Genitiv: "Während der Pause trinke ich Kaffee." "ab" marks a starting point and "von … bis" a range: "Ab Montag arbeite ich" and "Ich habe von 9 bis 17 Uhr Unterricht." "bis" on its own also sets an end point: "Ich bleibe bis Freitag."

📌
Golden rule: The case after a time preposition is fixed: seit/vor/in + Dativ, für + Akkusativ. "seit" is for something still going on, "vor" for the past.

It is clear where people trip up with time prepositions: "seit" or "seitdem", which case comes after "während", does "vor" take the Dativ? Instead of making you memorise the prepositions in isolation, the exercise has you choose them in a sentence; after each answer a short note tells you whether it was right or wrong and why, so you notice and fix the confusion at once. These prepositions are useful all the time when you describe a day, a schedule or a habit. Appointments and working hours come up often in the listening part of Goethe-Zertifikat A2 and telc A2, so knowing them well protects your score. Here every mistake is a small lesson that helps you build the next sentence more accurately.
