B1.2 · Temporale Nebensätze

Temporale Nebensätze: als, wenn, während, bevor, nachdem (time clauses)

Time clauses say when things happen and in what order: als (once in the past), wenn (repeated or in the future), während (at the same time), bevor (before), nachdem (after). In the subordinate clause the conjugated verb goes at the end. You will find the right connector yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the time clause with its English meaning. The connector decides the meaning.

B1 · TEMPORALE NEBENSAETZE
B1 Exercises on Time Clauses (temporale Nebensätze)

Time clauses start with connectors that set up the time relationship between two events, and because they are subordinate clauses, the conjugated verb always goes to the end. "Als" is used for a one-off, finished event in the past: "Als ich klein war, wohnte ich in Izmir." For repeated situations or the present/future, "wenn" is used: "Wenn ich Zeit habe, lese ich gern." "Während" expresses simultaneity, "bevor" what comes before, "nachdem" what comes after. With "nachdem" the sequence of tenses matters: if the main clause is in the Präteritum, the subordinate clause is in the Plusquamperfekt: "Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren." The als/wenn distinction and this sequence of tenses are the two crucial junctions of this topic.

📌
Golden rule: in a time clause the verb goes to the end; als for a one-off past event, wenn for repeated events or the present/future.

The interactive exercise on this page lets you learn by trying out how to choose the right connector and put the verb in the right place. After every answer you get explanatory feedback: you see why "wenn" is needed rather than "als", or why the verb goes to the end, and you understand the mistake instead of memorising it. This method is especially valuable for B1 learners who mix up "als/wenn" and the sequence of tenses with "nachdem". If you are preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc B1, you can reinforce these structures, which help you in both the written and the spoken part, at your own pace and without pressure.
