Relativsätze im Dativ & Genitiv (relative clauses – Dat/Gen)

In relative clauses the relative pronoun takes the Dativ (dem/der/denen) or Genitiv (dessen/deren) form depending on its function in the relative clause. At A2/B1 you met the Nominativ and Akkusativ; now it is the turn of the Dativ and Genitiv. You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the start of the relative clause with its case and gender. The pronoun's role in the relative clause decides its form.

B1 Relative Clauses: Dativ and Genitiv (dem/der, dessen/deren) Exercises

Relative clauses (Relativsätze) let you describe a noun in more detail with a subordinate clause. The case of the relative pronoun is decided by its role in its own clause. In the Dativ, masculine/neuter nouns take "dem" and feminine nouns "der": "Der Mann, dem ich helfe, ist mein Nachbar" (the man I am helping). In the Genitiv, possession is shown with "dessen" for masculine/neuter and "deren" for feminine/plural, followed directly by a noun without an article: "Die Frau, deren Sohn hier wohnt, kommt aus Köln." Pay attention to word order: the conjugated verb always moves to the end of the subordinate clause, and the clauses are separated by commas. When choosing the pronoun, it helps to identify the gender first and then the case the verb requires.

📌
Golden rule: The relative pronoun takes its gender and number from the noun it refers to, but its CASE from its role in the subordinate clause: Dativ "dem/der/denen", Genitiv "dessen/deren".

The interactive exercise on this page lets you try out the "dem or der", "dessen or deren" decision on real sentences. After every answer you get feedback with an explanation: it briefly shows why you chose the right pronoun and which gender and which case (Dativ or Genitiv) is at work; you correct the mistake as soon as you see it. It is aimed at B1 learners who find this structure difficult in the exam and at anyone preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc Deutsch B1. By repeating at your own pace you understand the relative pronouns through their logic rather than by rote, and you build more accurate sentences in the writing and speaking sections.
