B2.1 · Präpositionaladverbien

Präpositionaladverbien: da(r)- & wo(r)- (preposition–adverb compounds)

With a verb that takes a preposition, if the object is a THING, the compound da(r)- is used instead of a pronoun (Ich warte darauf); in questions it is wo(r)- (Worauf wartest du?). If the preposition begins with a vowel, an -r- is inserted (darauf, worüber). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the verb with the da(r)- form of its prepositional object. If the preposition begins with a vowel, an -r- is inserted.

B2 · PRAEPOSITIONALADVERBIEN
B2 da- and wo- Compounds (Präpositionaladverbien): darüber, dafür, worauf, womit – Exercises

In German, when a preposition refers not to a person but to a thing or a situation, we do not repeat the preposition; instead we use the compound da(r)- or wo(r)-. If the preposition begins with a vowel, a linking "r" is inserted: über → darüber, worüber; auf → darauf, worauf. These compounds usually depend on a particular verb, and that link has to be learnt by heart. In the sentence "Ich freue mich darauf", "darauf" refers to an event that has not yet been mentioned but is coming; in a question we say "Worauf freust du dich?". By the same logic: "Wir sprechen darüber" and "Womit hast du das gemacht?" Here the da-/wo- element stands either at the start of the sentence or in its place next to the verb; it is not a separable part.

📌
Golden rule: For things, use da(r)- instead of the preposition: "darauf, damit"; in questions, wo(r)-: "worauf, womit". If the preposition begins with a vowel, -r- is inserted.

When you choose the right compound, the explanation shows which verb takes which preposition and why the linking "r" is needed, so you choose between darüber/dafür or worauf/womit by seeing the rule rather than by guessing. Linking abstract ideas fluently and moving to formal language is the backbone of B2. The topic is especially useful for the writing and speaking sections of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, telc B2 and TestDaF, which test these verb–preposition links; by repeating at your own pace you quickly weed out the patterns you get wrong.
