A2 · PERSONALPRONOMEN DATIV
A2 Exercises: Personal Pronouns in the Dativ (mir, dir, ihm…)

In German, the personal pronouns that show "to whom" an action is done take the Dativ. So instead of I/you/he they become to me, to you, to him: ich → mir, du → dir, er → ihm, sie → ihr, wir → uns, ihr → euch, sie/Sie → ihnen/Ihnen. You mostly meet them with verbs like geben, helfen, danken and gehören. For example "Ich gebe ihm das Buch" (I am giving him the book) or "Kannst du mir helfen?" (Can you help me?). In the sentence "Das gehört uns", "uns" means "to us".

📌
Golden rule: Personal pronouns in the Dativ (to whom?) change: ich→mir, du→dir, er→ihm, sie→ihr, sie(plural)→ihnen.

The most common confusion with these pronouns is the "mir or mich" dilemma, i.e. telling the Dativ from the Akkusativ. In the exercise you choose the correct Dativ pronoun in each sentence and straight away get a short explanation of why "ihm" or "ihr" is used and which verb needs the Dativ. This way you settle the correct form by trying it out one by one. These pronouns come up a lot in the listening part of Goethe-Zertifikat A2 and telc A2; choosing the right pronoun in questions like "Wem hilfst du?" turns into points. After a few rounds the pattern falls into place, and in everyday conversation you form sentences like "give it to me, tell him" without thinking.
