A2.1 · Ordinalzahlen & Datum

Ordinalzahlen & Datum (ordinal numbers and dates)

Ordinal numbers (first, second…) are formed by adding -te/-ste to the number; some are irregular (erste, dritte, siebte, achte). When you give a date, you use der + ordinal number or am + ordinal number + -en. You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: a date with «am» is in the Dativ: am + ordinal number + -en. Match the figure with the written-out form.

A2 · ORDINALZAHLEN DATUM
A2 German Ordinal Numbers and Dates (Datum) Exercises

In this A2 topic you learn ordinal numbers (Ordinalzahlen) and how to say dates. Ordinal numbers answer the question "which one in order?" and usually take an ending: from 1 to 19 "-te" (der vierte Tag = the fourth day), from 20 onwards "-ste" (der zwanzigste Mai). Careful, some are irregular: der erste, der dritte, der siebte, der achte. For dates, you answer the question "when?" with "am" and the ending becomes "-en": "Ich habe am dritten Mai Geburtstag." In writing, do not forget the full stop: der 3. Oktober, am 21. Juni.

📌
Golden rule: Ordinal numbers are declined like adjectives; in dates the day comes with am + ordinal + -en: "am ersten Mai", "am dritten Juni".

Two points cause confusion in this topic: the irregular forms (erste, dritte, siebte, achte) and deciding between "der" and "am". "Der" is used to say which one something is in order, "am" when you give a date. When you complete a sentence in the exercise, you see not only right or wrong but also, for example, why "am dritten" is needed, so you place the endings without memorising them. These patterns are useful all the time when you make an appointment or talk about a birthday or holiday dates. Writing a date (for example in a reply to an invitation) is a classic task in the writing section of Goethe-Zertifikat A2 and telc A2. As you repeat the sentences, you will also start to form the "-sten" ending of larger numbers without mistakes.
