A2.1 · Lokale Präpositionen

Lokale Präpositionen: Wo? (+ Dativ) (prepositions of place – where?)

When you say where something is (Wo?), prepositions of place are used with the Dativ (auf dem Tisch, neben der Tür). Some prepositions merge with the article (an+dem=am, in+dem=im, bei+dem=beim). You will work out the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: with the question Wo? the preposition takes the Dativ. Match preposition + noun with the Dativ form.

A2 · LOKALE PRAEPOSITIONEN WO
A2 Prepositions of Place Exercises: the Question "Wo?" and the Dativ (an, auf, in, neben…)

In German, when we say where something is, we use the question "Wo?", and after the preposition of place the noun is in the Dativ. In other words, there is no movement; the position is fixed. The nine most common prepositions are: an, auf, in, neben, zwischen, unter, über, vor, hinter. For example: "Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch." (The book is lying on the table.) "Die Lampe hängt an der Wand." (The lamp is hanging on the wall.) "Die Katze sitzt unter dem Stuhl." (The cat is sitting under the chair.) Note: der → dem, die → der, das → dem; "in dem" is usually shortened to "im", and "an dem" to "am".

📌
Golden rule: The question "Wo?" (where) expresses place and rest and always takes the Dativ: "im", "am", "auf dem", "hinter dem".

On this page you need to get two things right at the same time: choosing the right preposition ("auf" or "über"?) and the correct Dativ article (dem or der?). As soon as you complete a sentence, a short note appears explaining, for example, why it is "im" and not "in dem", or why "auf dem" is used; this way you will not make the same mistake again. Prepositions of place are a cornerstone of A2: they come up constantly when you describe a room, a photo or where things are. Describing a picture is a frequent task in the speaking section of Goethe-Zertifikat A2 and telc A2, which makes this practice valuable. By repeating the sentences you get used to answering the question "where?" with confidence.
