B1.2 · Konzessivsätze

Konzessivsätze: obwohl / trotzdem (concessive clauses: although / nevertheless)

obwohl (although) starts a subordinate clause and the verb goes to the end: Ich gehe raus, obwohl es regnet. trotzdem, on the other hand, is an adverb and stands in the main clause; the verb follows in position 2: Es regnet. Trotzdem gehe ich raus. You will find the correct structure yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the obwohl clause with the trotz + Genitiv phrase that has the same meaning.

B1 Exercises on Konzessivsätze: Contrast with obwohl and trotzdem

Konzessivsätze let you express an unexpected result, something that happens "in spite of" something else. There are two basic ways to do this. "obwohl" is a subordinating conjunction and pushes the conjugated verb to the end: "Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren." Because the subordinate clause comes first here, the main clause starts with the conjugated verb, so two verbs stand side by side on either side of the comma (… regnet, gehen …). "trotzdem", on the other hand, is a connecting adverb; when it starts the sentence, the conjugated verb follows straight after it: "Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren." So you express the same meaning, but one opens a subordinate clause and the other causes inversion in the main clause. Depending on which you choose, the position of the verb changes completely.

📌
Golden rule: obwohl starts a subordinate clause and sends the verb to the end; trotzdem is an adverb, and in position 1 it keeps the verb in position 2.

The interactive exercise on this page works on exactly what is hardest about these two structures: putting the verb in the right place and choosing correctly between "obwohl" and "trotzdem". After every answer you get explanatory feedback; when you make a mistake you see why it is wrong and where the verb should go. This way you learn the rule by using it rather than by memorising it. It is ideal for intermediate learners preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc B1 who want to build better-connected sentences in the written and spoken parts.
