B1.2 · Konnektoradverbien

Konnektoradverbien: deshalb, trotzdem, sonst (connecting adverbs (Verb Pos. 2))

Connecting adverbs link two main clauses but take position 1 themselves, so the verb comes next in position 2: deshalb/deswegen (therefore), trotzdem (nevertheless), sonst (otherwise), außerdem (in addition), dann (then). You will find the right adverb and word order yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the connecting adverb with its English meaning. If it comes first, the verb follows straight after it.

B1 Exercises on Connecting Adverbs: deshalb, deswegen, trotzdem, außerdem

Connecting adverbs (Konnektoradverbien) link two sentences through a logical relationship: "deshalb" and "deswegen" express a consequence ("that's why"), "trotzdem" a contrast ("nevertheless"), "außerdem" an addition ("in addition"). The most important rule: when they come at the start of the sentence, the subject and the verb swap places, which is called inversion. This is because the conjugated verb in German must always be in second position. In "Es regnet, deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause" (It is raining, so I am staying at home), "deshalb" is first, the verb "bleibe" second and the subject "ich" third. Another example: "Er ist müde, trotzdem geht er zur Arbeit" (He is tired, but he still goes to work). The trick to inversion is not to forget to count the adverb.

📌
Golden rule: When connecting adverbs (deshalb, trotzdem, dennoch) are in position 1, the verb stays in position 2 and the subject comes AFTER the verb.

The interactive exercise on this page works sentence by sentence on exactly the tricky point: the order of verb and subject after an adverb at the start of the sentence. After every answer you get explanatory feedback: you see the correct order and learn why the sentence is inverted and what each connector means. This way you correct your mistakes by understanding the logic rather than by memorising. If you are preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc B1, this structure comes up often in both the written and the spoken part; regular practice makes inverted patterns such as "deshalb komme ich" automatic, so you can use them without hesitation in the exam.
