A2.1 · weil, dass, wenn, ob

Konjunktionen: weil & dass (subordinate clauses and verb order)

weil (because) and dass (that) introduce a subordinate clause; in this clause the conjugated verb goes to the VERY END: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. und/oder/aber, on the other hand, are coordinating conjunctions and do not change the verb position. You will work out the correct structure yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the main clause with the right continuation. In the subordinate clause the verb comes last.

A2 Exercises: Subordinate Clauses with weil and dass

In German the conjunctions weil (because) and dass (that) start a subordinate clause, and in this clause the conjugated verb moves to the very end. In a plain sentence you say "Ich lerne Deutsch", but when you add a reason the verb goes to the end: "Ich bleibe heute zu Hause, weil ich krank bin." The same rule applies to dass: "Ich glaube, dass das Wetter morgen besser wird." Here "bin" and "wird" move away from the subject to the end of the sentence. The comma between the main clause and the subordinate clause is compulsory, and finding the right final position for the verb is the most common stumbling block at A2.

📌
Golden rule: The conjunctions weil and dass send the conjugated verb in the subordinate clause to the VERY END: "Ich bleibe, weil ich krank bin."

One reflex is all you need here: putting the conjugated verb of the subordinate clause at the very end. It sounds simple, but saying "weil ich bin krank" instead of "weil ich krank bin" is a very common mistake at A2. When you put the verb in the wrong place in the exercise, you immediately see the correct order and the reason for it, so you reinforce the rule by applying it. If you are preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat A2 or telc Deutsch A2, this structure is very useful: in both the writing and the speaking parts you have to give reasons and opinions whenever you are asked "why". Making weil and dass a reflex saves you time and gives you confidence in those tasks.
