B1.2 · Infinitiv + zu

Infinitivsätze mit zu (ohne/statt/um … zu) (infinitive clauses with zu)

After certain verbs and expressions the second verb becomes zu + infinitive (Ich habe vor, zu kommen). There are also the patterns ohne … zu, (an)statt … zu and um … zu. With separable verbs zu goes in the middle: aufzustehen. You will find the correct form yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the infinitive with its zu form. With a separable prefix zu goes in the middle; before be-/ver-/er-/über- it is written separately.

B1 Exercises on Infinitive Clauses with zu (Infinitivsätze)

In German we often link one verb to another with the structure "zu + infinitive". The conjugated main verb comes first and the infinitive with "zu" goes to the end: "Ich versuche, früher aufzustehen" (I am trying to get up earlier). Separable verbs cause the most trouble: "zu" goes between the prefix and the stem, so "aufstehen" becomes "aufzustehen". The same rule works in "Ich habe vergessen, dich anzurufen" (I forgot to call you). This structure follows expressions such as "versuchen, vergessen, anfangen, vorhaben, Lust haben", and the subject is the same person in both parts; if the subject changes, you need a "dass" clause instead of an infinitive with "zu".

📌
Golden rule: Put the second verb at the end as zu + Infinitiv; with separable verbs "zu" goes in the middle: "einzukaufen", "aufzustehen".

The interactive exercises on this page reinforce where "zu" goes and how it is written as one word with separable verbs. Every answer is followed by explanatory feedback: you see why "anzurufen" is written that way or where the comma goes, and you correct your mistake straight away. By trying again you can make the correct pattern stick. This practice is especially useful for intermediate learners preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or telc B1 who want to build more fluent sentences in the writing and speaking parts.
