Feste Wendungen: Redewendung, Kollokation, Funktionsverb (fixed expressions)
eine Entscheidung treffen or machen? Where does zur Verfügung stehen belong? Practise using idioms, collocations and Funktionsverbgefüge with the right verb and in the right kind of text. All exercise content is in German.
Recognise: match each idiom with its English meaning. The meaning of an idiom cannot be worked out from its parts; learn the expression as a whole.
Matched: 0 / 10German Fixed Expressions Exercise (C2)
Fixed expressions are not a single group: an idiom does not take its meaning from its parts, a collocation exists purely by convention, and the Funktionsverbgefüge is the backbone of formal and academic texts. This exercise practises the three separately and focuses on choosing the right verb.
Many learners translate the verb word for word from their own language: you do not say eine Entscheidung nehmen but eine Entscheidung treffen. The explanation for each question names slips like this and makes it easier to learn the expression together with its verb.
