German Varieties and Dialects Exercise (C2)

At C2 you are not expected to speak a dialect but to recognise varieties: to tell the dialect layer below the standard apart from the standard forms of the three centres (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). This exercise starts with sound correspondences (isch, net, Stoa) and moves on to concepts such as the pluricentric standard, mediale Diglossie and Präteritumschwund.

Listening texts may include speakers with a regional accent; what helps is recognising the pattern, not the individual word. In written work one rule applies: choose one variety and keep to it throughout the text. The explanations in the exercise show this distinction for every item.
