A2.1 · Demonstrativ & Indefinit

Demonstrativ- & Indefinitpronomen (demonstrative and indefinite pronouns)

The demonstrative pronoun dieser/diese/dieses means »this« and is declined like the article; indefinite pronouns (man, jemand, niemand, etwas, nichts) refer to people or things that are not specified. You will work out the correct use yourself in the exercise. All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: decline dieser to match the noun and case; for the indefinite pronouns, find the opposite.

A2 · DEMONSTRATIV INDEFINITPRONOMEN
A2 Demonstrative and Indefinite Pronoun Exercises (dieser, jeder, man, etwas)

Demonstrative pronouns (Demonstrativpronomen) point to something with emphasis: "dieser, diese, dieses", meaning "this". They change with gender and case: "Dieser Mantel ist zu teuer" (This coat is too expensive), "Ich nehme diese Tasche" (I'll take this bag). Indefinite pronouns (Indefinitpronomen), on the other hand, leave the person or thing unspecified: "Jeder kann Deutsch lernen" (Anyone can learn German), "Hier darf man nicht rauchen" (You may not smoke here), "alle Studenten" (all students). "Etwas" means something and "nichts" means nothing: "Möchtest du etwas trinken?" – "Nein, ich brauche nichts."

📌
Golden rule: dieser/jeder are declined like the definite article; man is always the subject in the Nominativ and has the impersonal meaning 'one / people'.

The trickiest part of this topic is hesitating between "dieser" and "diese", or between "man" and "jeder". As you fill in the sentences in the exercises one by one, these choices settle; because you see the correct form and a short reason right after each answer, you understand a mistake through its cause rather than by rote learning. If you are an A2 learner who is just starting to speak, these pronouns come up in half of your everyday sentences. It is also a useful review if you are preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat A2 or telc A2, because "jeder, alle, etwas, nichts" appear a lot in the exam texts. You can go back to any sentence, try again and stay with a structure until you are sure of it.
