Dativ (definite article and personal pronouns)

The Dativ marks the indirect object (Wem?). The difference from the Akkusativ: in the Dativ all articles change: der/das → dem, die → der, plural die → den (noun + -n). All exercise content is in German.

Recognise: match the Nominativ form with the Dativ form. In the plural the noun also takes -n.

A2 · DATIV
Dativ – Definite Article and Personal Pronouns

The Dativ marks the indirect object (Wem?) and follows many prepositions. Here the article of each gender changes in its own way.

📌
Golden rule: In the Dativ all articles shift – der/das → dem, die → der, plural die → den (+ -n on the noun).

This page practises all four forms (masculine, feminine, neuter, plural) side by side, so you learn the changes without mixing them up. In Goethe and telc A2 the Dativ comes up again and again together with prepositions (mit, nach, bei).
