Format of the A1 Writing Section

The writing section (Schreiben) of the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start Deutsch 1) has two parts and takes about 20 minutes in total:

  • Teil 1 – Filling in a form: completing five missing details in a form using clues from a text
  • Teil 2 – Short message/email: a short personal message of about 30 words that responds to three content points. You must include a salutation (Anrede) and a closing (Gruß).

💡 Scoring (official Goethe-Institut criteria): 3 points for each content point (task fully and clearly completed), 1.5 points (partly completed), 0 points (not completed). Anrede and Gruß are assessed separately.

Salutations and Closing Phrases

Whether your letter should be formal or informal depends on your relationship with the recipient. Both types can come up in the A1 exam.

Type of letterSalutation (Anrede)Closing (Gruß)
Formal
(institution, authority, someone you don't know)
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
Sehr geehrte Frau Müller,
Sehr geehrter Herr Schmidt,
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Freundliche Grüße
Semi-formal
(teacher, doctor, neighbour)
Liebe Frau Gruber,
Lieber Herr Meyer,
Viele Grüße
Herzliche Grüße
Informal
(friends, family, close acquaintances)
Liebe Anna,
Lieber Thomas,
Hallo Maria,
Liebe Grüße
Viele Grüße
Bis bald

⚠️ Note: In German, the salutation is followed by a comma and you continue on the next line; the first word starts with a lower-case letter (unless it is a noun, a name or a formal pronoun such as Sie, Ihnen or Ihr, which are always capitalised in German). There is no punctuation after the closing.

Letter-Writing Strategy for the Exam

  • First, work out who the recipient is. Someone you know (informal), an institution (formal) or someone like a teacher or doctor (often semi-formal, depending on your relationship)? Choose the salutation and closing accordingly.
  • Respond to all three content points. Under the Goethe-Institut's scoring criteria, each point is marked separately. If you leave one out, you lose those points.
  • Stick to the word count. Aim for about 30 words, with 1–2 sentences per point. Avoid writing too little or too much.
  • Don't forget the Anrede and Gruß. They are assessed separately; if you leave them out, you lose points.
  • Write simple sentences. At A1 level, being understood matters more than grammatical perfection. Use patterns such as "Ich habe...", "Können Sie...", "Ich möchte...".
  • Avoid complex tenses. The Präsens (present tense) and Perfekt (past tense) are enough. Polite fixed phrases such as "Ich möchte …" or "Könnten Sie …?" are fine; otherwise avoid the Konjunktiv and the Passiv.
  • Check your text afterwards. Check for basic errors in capitalisation, comma use and verb endings. Allow 2–3 minutes for checking.
