What does level A1 mean?
In the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), A1 is the first stage of the “basic user” band. At this level learners can introduce themselves, ask simple questions and understand short, concrete expressions they meet in everyday life.
A1 is the goal for complete beginners. The grammar is still limited: basic verb conjugation, numbers, colours, days of the week and words for family members form the core of this level. With a vocabulary of roughly 600–800 words you can manage basic communication.
What can you do at this level?
Understands short sentences spoken slowly and clearly. Can grasp familiar words and set phrases in context.
Can read and understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences. Can make sense of posters, forms and short notes.
Can write short, simple sentences about themselves and their surroundings. Can fill in basic personal details (name, address, nationality) on a form.
Can introduce themselves and say where they live and what they do. Can hold a simple conversation if the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
A1 exams
A1 is the language threshold required for a family reunification visa to Germany. The main certificates at this level are:
The Goethe-Institut's A1 exam. In Turkey it is held at the Goethe centres in Ankara and Istanbul. It is officially accepted for family reunification applications. The exam consists of listening, reading and writing plus an oral part. The pass mark is 60 out of 100.
Another A1 certificate recognised across Europe. In Turkey it is offered through various language schools; however, for A1 certificates issued in Turkey, the German missions' visa sections accept only Goethe and ÖSD.
Based in Austria; accepted at German and Austrian consulates. Its content and format largely match the other exams.
Who is this level for?
Turkish citizens who want to join their spouse in Germany must pass the A1 exam. The certificate is submitted with the visa application.
If you have never studied German and want to start with the alphabet, A1 is the natural starting point.
Families planning to move to Germany who want to learn basic German together with their children.
A1 is the first step on the CEFR scale; A2, B1 and beyond require a solid foundation.
