What Is the Goethe-Zertifikat?

The Goethe-Zertifikat is the official language certificate awarded by the Goethe-Institut, the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany, and corresponds directly to the levels of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). It serves as proof in a wide range of situations, from visa applications and university admission to citizenship procedures and job applications. The exams assess the four core skills, and you need at least 60 out of 100 points to pass. A1 and A2 are not modular; at these two levels the total score counts (at A2 you also need 45/75 in the written part and 15/25 in speaking). From B1 onwards, each module is assessed separately.

Levels — and a Free Simulation for Each Level

Choose your level from the cards below. The Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen simulations at each level follow the layout of the official sample exam (Modellsatz) published by the Goethe-Institut for that level: reading and listening are scored automatically, and in writing and speaking your text and recording are assessed automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do the exams cost?

Fees vary by country, exam centre and level, and are updated periodically. Check the current fees on the website of the centre where you will take the exam or via Goethe-Institut Turkey.

What does ‘modular exam’ mean?

For the B1, B2, C1 and C2 exams you can take all four modules (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen) together on the same day, or take the modules on separate dates. A module you fail can be retaken on its own.

Where should I start my preparation?

First find out your current level with the quick placement test; then work through the simulations for your target level to identify your strengths and weaknesses in each skill. Use our lesson pages to work on the topics you need to improve.

Does the certificate expire?

Goethe certificates themselves do not expire; however, universities and official bodies usually ask for a certificate obtained within the last few years. Always check the requirements of the institution you are applying to.
