About Präteritum-Meister

The Präteritum is the simple past of German, used mostly in writing and storytelling, and with sein, haben and the modal verbs also in everyday speech. Strong verbs change their stem (gehen → ging, sehen → sah), sein has the irregular form war, mixed verbs change their stem and take -te (bringen → brachte), and regular verbs add -(e)te (regnen → regnete). In each question you see a German sentence with a gap, its English translation and, after you answer, the infinitive; you choose the correct past form from four options. After every answer a short note explains the form.

Choose A2 (sein, haben, werden and modal verbs), B1 (common strong verbs, plus one regular verb for contrast), B2 (mixed and less common strong verbs) or Mixed. A round has up to 10 questions, and you have 3 lives. The game is free, needs no account and keeps your progress in your browser.
