About Modal-Meister

German modal verbs change the meaning of a sentence: können (ability, possibility), müssen (necessity), dürfen (permission), wollen (wanting, plans), sollen (advice, someone else's demand, hearsay), mögen (liking) and möchten (polite requests). In each question you see a German sentence with a gap and its English translation, and you choose the modal verb that matches the English meaning from four options. After every answer a short label and note explain the meaning.

Choose A1 (basic meanings), A2 (nuances), B1 (nicht müssen vs. nicht dürfen, sollen for hearsay and Konjunktiv II forms such as könnte, sollte and dürfte) or a mixed round. A round has up to 10 questions, and you have 3 lives. The game is free, needs no account and keeps your progress in your browser.
