The German Genitiv shows possession and belonging, much like English ’s or of: das Auto des Vaters (the father’s car). With the definite article, masculine and neuter nouns take des (and most add -s or -es), feminine and plural nouns take der; the indefinite forms are eines and einer. Prepositions such as während, wegen and trotz take the Genitiv in standard written German (in casual speech you may also hear the Dativ). In each round you see a German sentence with a gap and its English translation, and you choose the correct form from four options. After every answer a short note explains the rule.
Choose A2 (basic possession), B1 (plural, indefinite article, prepositions), B2 (more prepositions and weak nouns such as des Studenten) or a mixed round. A round has up to 10 questions, and you have 3 lives. The game is free, needs no account and keeps your progress in your browser.
