This game practices the two most common ways to say “in order to / so that” in German, and the subjects decide which one fits. If the main clause and the purpose clause have the same subject, um … zu is the usual choice: the subject is not repeated and the verb comes last as zu + infinitive (Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu studieren). If the subjects are different, you need damit: the clause keeps its own subject and the conjugated verb goes to the end (Ich erkläre es noch einmal, damit du es verstehst). damit is also possible with the same subject, but um … zu is more common. With separable verbs, zu goes between the prefix and the verb: loszufahren.
In each question you see a main clause with a gap and its English meaning, and you choose the correct purpose clause from four options. After every answer a short note compares the subjects and shows the rule. Choose A2 (um … zu), B1 (damit), B2 (mixed, with separable verbs) or Mixed. A round has up to 10 questions, and you have 3 lives. The game is free, needs no account and keeps your progress in your browser.
